Community Outreach Case Study

Screenshot of the article "‘Elite’ Church Puts the Needs of the Hungry Up Front—By Planting a Garden" on the Clergy into Action websiteAs a research associate for the national Clergy into Action Study, I worked with Principal Investigator Dr. David Gortner on website content communicating study findings. Besides contributing to a growing body of research on how newly ordained men and women can effectively make the transition from student to pastor, the Clergy into Action website (http://into-action.net/) was developed to inform the choices made by future church leaders and the organizations that train and educate them.

I wrote this brief case study based on transcripts of extensive interviews with one Clergy into Action Study participant. An associate pastor at an urban church, she describes how she used the building of a vegetable garden to engage the congregation with its community in new and challenging ways.
